Icon are proud to announce that we have renewed our carbon neutral status for the third consecutive year, in partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain. This milestone reflects our ongoing dedication to environmental sustainability and responsible corporate citizenship, alongside our EcoVadis Gold certification and ISO 14001 accreditation in environmental management.
Assessment
Since first achieving carbon neutrality for 2021, we have continuously measured, reduced, and offset all carbon emissions relating to our business activities. Our efforts as a company are guided by our passionate, employee-run Sustainability Committee who have been tasked with challenging us to do better wherever we can.
To achieve carbon neutral status, this year we worked closely with Carbon Neutral Britain to measure our total carbon footprint for the period from 1st January 1 2023 to 31st December 2023. This assessment included emissions from various sources such as company-owned vehicles, energy usage, business travel, and staff commuting. Our emissions were meticulously calculated following ISO 14064 and GHG Protocol Emissions Standard principles. These principles ensure relevance, completeness, consistency, transparency and accuracy to guarantee that our carbon neutral status is valid.
Offsetting Carbon Emissions
Over the past few years, we have worked hard to reduce our carbon emissions. We have implemented initiatives including changing to fully electric company vehicles, switching to green energy providers, replacing office equipment and more. However, we are always on a journey to reduce our emissions further.
As part of our carbon neutral status, we have invested in certified carbon offsetting projects through the Carbon Neutral Britain Climate Fund to offset our remaining emissions. These projects are internationally certified under the Verra – Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the Gold Standard – Voluntary Emission Reductions (VER), and the United Nations – Certified Emission Reductions (CER) programmes. The projects not only contribute to offsetting carbon emissions – they also support global efforts in education, employment, clean water access, and biodiversity conservation. Some examples of the projects we have contributed to include: forest creation in the United Kingdom, building a solar farm in Turkey and solar lighting in Zambia.
