This year’s World Environment Day focuses on climate action and the signals our planet is sending us. Around the world, rising temperatures, changing weather patterns and increasing pressure on natural ecosystems send a reminder that environmental responsibility can no longer be treated as a future challenge. It is a responsibility for today.
At Icon, the theme resonates strongly with our own approach to sustainability. We believe that meaningful climate action begins with understanding our impact and taking practical steps to improve. As a global relocation company, we recognise that our activities contribute to carbon emissions and resource consumption, and we are committed to reducing that impact year after year.
World Environment Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made, the challenges that remain, and the actions we are taking to build a more sustainable future.
Why the environment matters to us
Relocation and global mobility connect people, businesses and opportunities across the world. While these services create significant value, they also involve travel, transportation and resource consumption that contribute to carbon emissions.
For us, sustainability means taking ownership of those impacts and continually seeking ways to reduce them wherever we can. We do not believe there is a finish line when it comes to environmental responsibility. Instead, we see sustainability as an ongoing journey of improvement, innovation and accountability.
This commitment is reflected throughout our business – from the way we manage our offices and procure materials, to how we support clients and engage with our global supply chain.
A recognised commitment to sustainability
Over the past few years, we have worked hard to build a robust environmental management framework and ensure our efforts are independently verified.
In our last three EcoVadis audits, we have received two Gold ratings and one Platinum, placing us among the top 5% and top 1% of companies assessed globally. We also maintain ISO 14001 certification for environmental management and report transparently on our sustainability performance through our annual Sustainability Progress Report.
These accreditations are important because they provide independent validation of our actions and help ensure we remain accountable for our commitments.
Managing and reducing our carbon footprint
The 2026 World Environment Day theme challenges organisations to respond to the signals the planet is sending. For us, that starts with measurement. Before meaningful action can be taken, we need to understand where our emissions are generated and where we can make the greatest improvements. Through annual carbon footprint assessments and carbon neutral certification, we continuously monitor our impact and identify opportunities to reduce it.
As part of our carbon neutral certification, we conduct annual carbon footprint assessments covering Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions. This allows us to identify where emissions are generated and focus our efforts on the areas where we can make the greatest difference.
Following our most recent audit in 2025, we have committed to reducing our carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving Net Zero by 2050, in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Reducing emissions is our priority but, where emissions cannot currently be eliminated, we offset them through verified environmental projects. Last year, we supported the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project, helping to restore one of the UK’s most valuable marine ecosystems while contributing to carbon sequestration and biodiversity recovery.
In addition, emissions generated through the movement of household goods managed by our Icon Move team are calculated and offset through Gold Standard-certified forestry projects.
Reducing energy consumption
Climate action is not only about major innovations or large-scale investments. It is also about rethinking the everyday systems that power our businesses. From the energy we use to the equipment we purchase, we continually review how our operations can become more efficient, less resource-intensive and more sustainable.
In 2024, we switched our head office to a 100% renewable energy tariff, significantly reducing the carbon impact of our electricity consumption.
Alongside this transition, we have implemented a range of practical measures to reduce energy use, including:
- Motion-activated lighting throughout much of the office.
- Timed heating systems to prevent unnecessary energy consumption outside working hours.
- Improved window insulation to reduce heat loss.
- Investment in energy-efficient IT equipment when replacements are required.
While these changes may seem small individually, together they contribute to meaningful reductions in our environmental footprint.
Making more sustainable purchasing decisions
Environmental responsibility extends beyond our direct operations.
Our Sustainability Committee reviews and approves products before purchase, assessing factors such as recyclability, packaging, sourcing and environmental impact. This ensures sustainability considerations are incorporated into everyday purchasing decisions across the business.
Within our offices, this approach can be seen in everything from the eco-friendly cleaning products we use to our coffee machine, which eliminates the waste associated with single-use coffee pods. Coffee grounds are composted, and products are selected with sustainability and waste reduction in mind.
Cutting waste and supporting circular practices
One of the simplest ways to reduce environmental impact is to create less waste in the first place.
Several years ago, Icon adopted a largely paperless approach to operations through digital systems and workflows. Today, documents are only printed when absolutely necessary, and paper that is no longer required is either reused or recycled.
We also operate a comprehensive recycling programme across our offices, with dedicated streams for mixed recycling, compostable waste and specialist recycling collections. Regular monitoring helps us track waste generation and identify opportunities for further improvements.
Reducing travel-related emissions
Travel is an unavoidable part of many global mobility services, but there are still opportunities to reduce its environmental impact.
Our hybrid working model helps reduce commuting emissions by allowing employees to work from home for part of the week. We also encourage virtual meetings where appropriate and aim to consolidate business travel whenever possible.
When travel is needed, we actively promote more sustainable options, including public transport, car sharing and cycling through the Bike2Work scheme.
We are also continuing our transition towards electric vehicles, supporting employees with home charging installations where company electric vehicles are provided.
Driven by our people
One of the most important drivers of our environmental progress is our people.
Our Environmental Committee, established in 2022, brings together employees from across the business who are passionate about sustainability. The committee helps identify opportunities for improvement, reviews purchasing decisions, supports environmental initiatives and encourages sustainable thinking throughout the organisation.
This collaborative approach ensures sustainability remains a shared responsibility and enables innovative ideas to emerge from every part of the business.
Looking ahead
World Environment Day is a reminder that creating a more sustainable future requires ongoing action, not just ambition. The message is clear: the planet is sending signals, and now is the time to respond.
At Icon, we believe that responding means more than setting targets. It means embedding sustainability into everyday decisions, continually reviewing our impact, and taking practical action wherever we can make a difference.
We are proud of the progress we have made so far, from achieving carbon neutral status and transitioning to renewable energy, to reducing waste and supporting environmental restoration projects. However, sustainability is a journey of continuous improvement, and we remain committed to finding new ways to reduce our environmental footprint.
This World Environment Day, we are reminded that climate action is not the responsibility of governments alone. Businesses, suppliers, employees and individuals all have a role to play. By working together and taking action today, we can help create a more resilient and sustainable future for generations to come.
Happy World Environment Day from everyone at Icon.
