Due to the high voltage of electricity, bathrooms in the UK do not have the standard Type G plugs that you would find throughout the rest of the property. To restrict usage of electrical items near water sources, you will instead find two prong ‘shaver sockets’ in bathrooms. This means that you will need to consider how to power your electric toothbrush while in the UK.
USB chargers
If your electric toothbrush charger has a USB charging port, you may be able to continue using your toothbrush in the UK. Check on the base of the charger, or the product details, for the voltage. If the voltage is given as either 100-240V or 220-240V then you can use it in the UK. You will need to purchase a USB to shaver socket adapter like this one (to charge the toothbrush in the bathroom) or a USB to Type G plug like this one (to charge it elsewhere in the property). Alternatively, you can use a plug adaptor to allow your existing plug to fit into a UK socket.
Shaver sockets
If you are coming from a country that uses the same shaver sockets as the UK (Republic of Ireland, Cyprus and Malta) then you can continue to use your existing plug.
It is important to note that, although they look similar, the two-pin shaver socket in the UK is not the same as the sockets used in the EU. Please do not try to use EU plugs in a UK shaver socket.
Where to buy electric toothbrushes
If neither of the above apply, we recommend that you buy a new electric toothbrush for your time in the UK to ensure that it is safe to use. You can buy electric toothbrushes in many places, including at large supermarkets, drugstores or on Amazon.
The main brands for electric toothbrushes in the UK are: Oral-B and Phillips.
