If you have a young child, it is your responsibility to make your rental home safe for your child – not your landlords. You may be able to request that they make some adjustments to your property, but they are not required to do so. You may also request permission to make changes yourself – but they are not obligated to grant permission. You should not make permanent changes to the property (e.g. drilling into walls) without your landlords permission as this can cause issues particularly at the end of your tenancy.
There are plenty of baby proofing products available which can help make your home safe without causing damage. Below are some examples.
Cupboard locks
Cupboard locks will help you keep products such as medicines away from your child. Most of these products require drilling into cupboards, which is not ideal when in a rental home. These locks, however, do not require drilling or permanent damage and are more appropriate for renters.
Corner protection
If there are sharp corners in your home or on your furniture, these corner guards can help prevent your child from getting hurt. Alternatively, foam padding tape can be attached to longer edges.
Door stoppers
Door stoppers can prevent children from getting their fingers trapped in doors.
Door locks
If you want to keep your child out of a room but there isn’t a lock on the door, you could use these adhesive locks. These make it difficult for young children to use the handle, while keeping it easy for adults.
Gas stove knob locks
If there is a gas stove in your property, knob locks can prevent children from accidentally turning on the gas.
Stair gates
Pressure-fitted stair gates will help protect your baby from the stairs while also avoiding damage to your property.
