In nuclear propulsion the future of sustainable shipping?

As the shipping and moving industry faces growing pressure to cut carbon emissions, the race is on to find cleaner, more sustainable ways to power vessels. With over 90% of global trade moving by sea, the sector contributes nearly 3% of global CO₂ emissions – a figure too large to ignore.

Among the solutions being explored, nuclear propulsion – long used in naval submarines and aircraft carriers – is getting renewed attention. But could it really play a role in sustainable commercial shipping? And what does it mean for companies in the moving and shipping sector looking to decarbonise?

Why shipping needs a new energy source

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious goals to slash greenhouse gas emissions from shipping: at least a 40% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 and full decarbonisation by 2050. For an industry built on long-range travel and heavy loads, meeting these targets is a major challenge.

Fuel-switching is essential – but finding a clean energy source that’s powerful, reliable, and scalable enough for ocean-going vessels is proving difficult.

What is nuclear propulsion?

Nuclear propulsion uses a nuclear reactor to generate heat, which produces steam to drive turbines and move the ship. Unlike diesel engines or heavy fuel oil, this process emits no CO₂ during operation.

This technology is not new. It’s been used for decades in military ships that require long-range endurance without refuelling. The idea is now being revisited for commercial use, especially for large vessels with long-haul routes.

There are some clear advantages:

  1. Zero operational emissions: Nuclear propulsion could eliminate direct CO₂ emissions from ship operations, helping companies meet sustainability targets without relying on carbon offsets.
  2. Unmatched range: A nuclear-powered vessel could operate for years without refuelling – cutting fuel logistics, costs, and port stops.
  3. Space efficiency: Nuclear fuel is far more energy-dense than fossil fuels, freeing up valuable space on board.
  4. Proven in practice: There are decades of operational experience in naval fleets, providing a foundation for commercial adaptation.

But, it is not without its challenges; despite the benefits, nuclear propulsion in commercial shipping faces serious hurdles:

  • Public perception and safety: Communities and ports may resist welcoming nuclear-powered ships due to fears of accidents or radiation leaks.
  • High upfront costs: Building and certifying nuclear-powered ships is expensive. Insurance, crew training, and infrastructure costs are also significant.
  • Regulatory gaps: International maritime laws around civilian nuclear vessels are still unclear, creating uncertainty for shipowners and operators.
  • Security concerns: There’s also the issue of nuclear materials falling into the wrong hands or being used outside civilian purposes.

One area of optimism lies in SMRs (small modular reactors), a new generation of compact, safer nuclear reactors designed for civilian use. These reactors could make nuclear propulsion more practical and acceptable, especially if international regulations evolve to support them.

Russia already operates the Sevmorput, a nuclear-powered cargo ship, and China operates a land-based one in Gansu Province, so this is already a viable product.

What it means for the moving and shipping industry

For companies in the moving and shipping space – especially those with a sustainability focus – nuclear propulsion may not be an immediate solution, but it signals where the industry could be heading for deep-sea transport. While nuclear ships may not appear at your docks tomorrow, they could become part of the future fleet within a few decades.
