Britain could have special relationship with EU after Brexit, says German foreign minister

17 August 2016

Britain could be given a “special status” in its relationship with the European Union after Brexit negotiations are complete, Germany’s foreign affairs minister said on Tuesday, but should not drag its feet over beginning EU-UK divorce talks.Michael Roth said that Britain should be ready to invoke Article 50 by January 2017 despite reports over the weekend that the so-called Brexit ministries run by David Davis and Liam Fox were short-staffed, in chaos and nowhere near ready for business.“Until the end of the year should really be sufficient time to get organised and adjust to the new situation,” he told Reuters in an interview. “We should not let too much time go by.”Mr Roth, a member of the Social Democrats, the junior partner in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition, said that substantive talks would begin only when Britain triggers “Article 50”, which sets the clock ticking on a two-year deadline to leave the EU.Source
